Louisville Cardinals show off their new “Iron Wings” Alternate Uniforms

August 12, 2022

The Louisville football program unveiled its new “Iron Wings” alternate uniform on Thursday morning, though it’s unclear when the look will make its on-field debut.

Paired with the Cardinals’ candy apple red helmet, which was first worn during the 2019 season, the gray jersey and pants follow the same template as their red home, white road and black alternate uniforms.

That includes a screenprinted wing pattern on the shoulders and sleeves and a drop shadow wordmark and numbers. The only difference is those all have “Louisville” across the chest, whereas the gray jersey has “The Ville” above the numbers.

The uniform itself features very little red, aside from the ACC patch and adidas logo on the shoulders and hip, as well as the sleeve cuffs. But when paired with the red helmet and red accessories, though, those smaller elements are more noticeable.

This isn’t the first time the Cardinals have worn uniforms that prominently display “The Ville,” which first made an appearance on the chest of their black alternate uniforms in 2009 and were worn again in 2010, albeit on a different template.

Louisville went 0-2 in those games, which were both at home. The base color of the “Iron Wings” alternate uniform suggests it will be worn on the road this fall, meanwhile.
