Long known as the Red River Shootout, the game was rebranded in 2005 as the Red River Rivalry to commemorate the 100th meeting between the programs and to distance itself from a name synonymous with gun violence. After AT&T had been a sponsor for several years, it was renamed the AT&T Red River Showdown in 2014. The 2023 edition was the last year of Texas and Oklahoma competing while members of the Big 12 conference.
